In September 2010, founding drummer Mike Portnoy announced that he was leaving the band. It was followed a year later by their ninth studio album, Systematic Chaos. Two more live albums were also released in this time period, and a new one, titled Score, was released for the band's 20th anniversary and featured the band backed by a 29-piece orchestra. In 2002, the group released Six Degrees of Inner Turbulence, followed by Train of Thought in 2003, and Octavarium in 2005. Rudess's first work was Scenes from a Memory, a concept album that followed the story of a murder mystery. In 1999, Jordan Rudess was hired to replace Sherinian. Moore left the group after the recording of 1994's Awake and was replaced by Derek Sherinian for the album's tour-he was later hired as a full member, appearing on the EP A Change of Seasons and the full album Falling Into Infinity. LaBrie's debut album was Images and Words, which was the band's first and only gold-certified album by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA), having sold more than 500,000 copies. Before the album's release the group agreed to change their name to "Dream Theater", inspired by a now-demolished California movie theater. The group signed with Mechanic Records, and released its debut album When Dream and Day Unite in 1989. After the band released a demo entitled Majesty Demos, Collins was replaced by Charlie Dominici in November 1987. The trio added keyboard player Kevin Moore and vocalist Chris Collins in order to complete their lineup. The band was formed under the name Majesty by guitarist John Petrucci, bassist John Myung, and drummer Mike Portnoy while the three of them were attending Berklee College of Music in September 1985. The discography of Dream Theater, an American progressive metal band, consists of fifteen studio albums, one extended play, nine live albums, one compilation album, eight video albums, nine singles, and twenty-one music videos. The only problem that comes with buying music CDs and DVDs is wondering where to put them! However, with a DVD rack, that problem can be solved instantly. Lastly, if you’re a true audiophile, you’ll appreciate the special features that you can find on some CDs and DVDs that won’t be available elsewhere. You might struggle to find early tracks by Def Leppard or B-sides of Prince online that you would easily find on CDs. Furthermore, the variety of music that is available on CDs and DVDs can’t be found online. Everywhere you look, you’re also still more likely to find a CD player in your car or home stereo than you would find an iPod dock or connector. However, as long as you don’t scratch your CDs or DVDs, they will work. And when it comes to longevity, music CDs and DVDs win – hard drives can crash and cloud services can fail. When it comes to price, new CDs can be cheaper than album downloads. However, there are still many benefits to buying music CDs and DVDs.ĭoes it still make sense to buy music CDs and DVDs? With streaming services like Spotify and Pandora offering on-demand music selection, they have almost rendered the need to buy music useless. Or are they? In an age where everything can be streamed online and instantly stored in our smartphones and other electronic devices, there’s still something so ingenuous about having a hard copy of your favourite band’s first concert or album in its original form. Just like the ubiquitous floppy disk, VHS, and cassette tapes, there’s a strong case building that even now music CDs and DVDs are finished.
